Prudence

  • Cal Newport explains this concept in his book Deep Work: Activities that are performed with full focus, with great attention, and that push the limits of our cognitive abilities to the limit. It is very difficult to imitate the values produced by working in this way.

  • Newport, who defines the concept of "superficial work", which is the opposite of prudent work, as "works based on operations and organization that does not require complete focus and cognitive effort", emphasizes that the tendency to become superficial has been increasing in recent years.

  • With the development and spread of technology, we lose our ability to focus because of the "uninterrupted" communication and our state of being in touch and accessible at all times.

  • According to Newport, who sees the "Focusing Skill" as the rising value of the 21st century, people who lose this skill turn to superficial work and are trapped in mediocrity.

  • According to Newport, it is possible to get rid of superficiality and mediocrity and improve our ability to focus. Developing custom routines and rituals and making them a habit can help us regain our ability to focus.

For this we can follow the steps below:

  1. Identifying a topic to work on allocate a time slot

  2. Preferring a quiet and convenient place

  3. Completely avoiding all distractions during the time frame we set. (TV, telephone, computer, internet, radio etc.)

  4. Starting with 20 minutes in the initial phase and increasing the time over time.

  5. Repeating this routine every day without waiting for inspiration or motivation.

  6. While doing all this, we can remind ourselves how important it is for us to know that “will” is not an unlimited resource, and to repeat our routine regularly, in order to turn focussed work into a habit.

  7. In addition, adopting and accepting the idea of not being “accessible” at certain times we set aside for ourselves during the day, except for special circumstances, will also facilitate our diligent work.
